Although studies had been made of this anemia since 1898, (2,3) it's hemolytic
character was first described by Monge in 1915.(4) Hemolysis was demonstrated by
the elevated indirect bilirubin (5,6), the increased phagocytosis of erytrocytes seen in autopsies,(7)
the indications of red cell regeneration, i.e. reticulocytosis and bone marrow
hyperplasia, (6,3,10) and by the incrase in fecal urobilinogen. (10,11)
Other charactereristics have been described by Hurtado, Merino and Pons.
