Patients say Lyme disease on increase, despite official denial of its existence in Australia
The medical industry says it is not possible to contract Lyme disease in Australia, so any person with symptoms is treated for what it calls "Lyme disease-like illness".
Lyme is caused by the borellia bacteria, carried by ticks and transmitted to humans when they bite.
But the definition of the disease is based on the North American strain of borrelia burgdoferi sensu stricto, making all other strains of Borellia bacteria technically not Lyme disease.

Baby koala infested with 100 ticks
YOUNG koala Mafeking's life was on the line when he was discovered on the road in Goonengerry, covered in blood and infested with ticks.
After a blood transfusion and tentative care at Friends of the Koalas he has made an impressive recovery.
But he wasn't the only one - two other young koalas were brought in within days of each other with the same problem.
But, if they have a massive amount of the venom then it will make them sick.
Blood-sucking ticks a new threat to health of koalas
BLOOD-SUCKING ticks have been found by scientists to have a secret role in the health of sick koalas.
"For the first time, we were able to identify mixed infections with up to five different species of the parasite called Trypanosoma, within the same koala,” she said.
"This is important because it gives a clearer picture of the diverse nature of parasites that potentially contribute to disease in our koala populations.”
