Een extra test op het chemokine CXCL13 kan meer duidelijkheid geven, blijkt uit het onderzoek van Van Burgel. “CXCL13 is soms ook verhoogd bij multiple sclerose en hiv-infecties, maar echt hoge waardes zie je vooral bij de ziekte van Lyme.” Als antigeen-presenterende cellen van het afweersysteem in contact komt met de borerliabacterie gaan zij CXCL13 produceren. De productie van dit chemokine stopt direct als er geen bacteriën meer zijn. “Het is dus een goede marker voor actieve infecties”, aldus de promovenda.
