Patricia voelde dat de diagnose MS niet klopte: De arts wist niet wat hij zag!

Van een energieke vrouw veranderde Patricia Vorstenbos (45) in een kasplantje. Maar de diagnose MS geloofde ze niet dus ging ze op onderzoek uit. Echtgenoot Cor en vriendin Corine waren sceptisch maar bleven haar steunen. "Zelf vond ik het ook heftig om dit pad te bewandelen; ik ging toch tegen de neuroloog in."

"Ik was net 40, zelfstandig ondernemer en hartstikke fit, toen ik ineens dubbel zag. Ik dacht eerst dat er iets met mijn lenzen was. Binnen twee weken belandde ik via de lenzenspecialist bij de neuroloog. Een MRI-scan liet witte vlekken op mijn hersenen zien: littekenweefsel van ontstekingen. Bijna direct kreeg ik het stempel MS, een chronische aandoening van het centrale zenuwstelsel.

Ik raad echt niemand af om naar een arts te gaan, ik geloof juist dat reguliere en alternatieve geneeskunde elkaar kunnen aanvullen. Maar mijn boodschap is wel: 'Blijf zelf nadenken en luister naar je gevoel'. Want dat heeft mij gered."

Newly discovered immune cells play role in inflammatory brain diseases

A team of researchers under the direction of the Medical Center—University of Freiburg has observed in an animal model that previously unknown types of immune cells are present in the inflamed brain in the course of multiple sclerosis (MS). The discovery was made through a new, high-resolution method for analyzing single cells. The method allowed the researchers from Freiburg and Munich to create a kind of immune cell atlas for the brain. They also report that these cells promote the development of the autoimmune disease MS.
